When did International Mud Day start?
2009
International Mud Day began in 2009 at a World Forum event, when Gillian McAuliffe from Australia and Bishnu Bhatta from Nepal got together to talk about ways to encourage feelings of community and appreciation for the world around us.
Why is mud Day celebrated?
The Mud day is a day for children to connect directly with the mother earth. They feel the warmth of mother earth by lying, rolling around and playing in the mud without any barriers. CM International School celebrated International Mud day on 29 June 2018.

What is mud play?
Mud play is like playing in a sandbox or on a beach, except it’s an activity with mud, which is just wet or damp dirt. Children can squish, dig, pile, or push mud around. They can also jump, splash, and slide in mud or even throw it against a wall!
How do you make mud?
Mix the cement and the sand together until they’re well blended. Different people will recommend different ratios for mixing (4:1, 5:1, 6:1, and 7:1), but a ratio of 5 parts sand to 1 part cement is the best starting option. “Stickier”, stronger mud should be made using the 4:1 ratio, but this is difficult to mix.

Now, every year on June 29th, International Mud Day celebrations happen all over the world as a way to connect children to the Earth and soil, and discover the messy joy that is comes from playing in and with mud.

- Mix the cocoa powder, cornstarch and water together.
- Then, add the oats into the mix.
- It’s a dough-like consistency.
- My LO added this into a bin with a bit of water at the edge.
- And, it was a fun muddy small world play. Fun!

In 2009 at the World Forum for Early Childhood Care and Education in Belfast the idea of International Mud Day had its beginnings. Two members of the Nature Action Collaborative for Children, Gillian McAuliffe from Western Australia and Bishnu Bhatta from Nepal, discussed the challenges children faced when playing in mud in each other’s context.

Mud Day, a fun way to kick off summer! My daycare closes for the summer (July and August), so the timing of Mud Day is perfect as it always occurs during the last week of daycare before the kids head off on summer holiday.
