How does Tab cel work?
Tabelecleucel (tab-cel) is an off-the-shelf allogeneic EBV-specific T cell immunotherapy generated from healthy donors that is selected for each patient (pt) from a library of T cells using the most appropriate human leukocyte antigen (HLA) restriction to address the patient’s disease.
What is tabelecleucel?
Tabelecleucel is a cellular therapy. It is made of white blood cells called cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) which have been expanded in the laboratory starting with cells from a healthy person who is immune to EBV. The cells recognize and destroy EBV-infected cells in the transplant recipient.
How does EBV cause PTLD?
Primary EBV infection increases the chance of developing PTLD 6 to 76 times. The high virion peak in the absence of an adequate immune response gives a massive infection of B cells and possibly bystander B cells, increasing the chance of development of PTLD.
What is lymphoproliferative disease?
B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders are conditions in the blood involving uncontrolled growth of lymphocytes (white blood cells). These conditions include such cancers as multiple myeloma, Hodgkin lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and such precursor conditions as monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis.
Does EBV infect T cells?
EBV is able to infect T cells in vivo, as evidenced by its association with a variety of T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders; however the role EBV plays in the pathogenesis of these diseases is currently unknown.
