How are spanners made?
Most types of spanner are made using the drop forging process. Steel rods are cut into short lengths, called billets, and each one is passed through an induction heating coil which uses electromagnetism to heat the metal to about 1000 degrees Celsius. The upper die drops onto the billet, forcing it into shape.
Which type of material is used for hand tools?
Tool steel is a type of carbon alloy steel that is well-matched for tool manufacturing, such as hand tools or machine dies. Its hardness, resistance to abrasion and ability to retain shape at increased temperatures are the key properties of this material.
What is CrV material?
CrV is a low alloy steel melted as VIM + VAR melt type. This grade is primarily made up of Chromium and Vanadium. This alloy has improved cleanliness as compared to traditional AOD + VAR low alloy grade such as 4340 and 300M. Because of this, this grade is often utilized in critical aerospace applications.
How is a spanner forged?
Most types of spanner are made using the drop forging process. Once the billets are heated to a certain temperature, the dies then forge the heated metal into the shape of a wrench. Once the wrench is forged into shape, another die machine trims the excess metal.
How many types of spanners are there?

What steel is used for wrenches?
Chromium vanadium steel is an alloy tool steel with chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) alloy elements. It has better strength and toughness than carbon steel, so it is a great material for high quality tools. Commonly used for wrenches, screwdrivers, manual sleeves generally use 50BV30 chrome vanadium steel.
What steel is used for screwdrivers?
Screwdrivers are made from either chrome vanadium steel or carbon steel.
What steel are screwdrivers made of?
Most screwdrivers are made from a polymer called acetate, a high-carbon steel alloy, and finished with chrome, nickel, or another similarly durable substance. Other materials are sometimes used, as well, though not as often.
Is Crmo a steel?
Chromoly is a chrome-alloy steel with a medium carbon content and . It is a steel that is stronger than carbon steel (more commonly used in bike manufacturing), so we can use thin wall tubing, giving you a lightweight frame that will last through years of riding.
What is S2 material?
S2 Steel: S2 steel is harder than chrome vanadium or 8650 steel, but it is also less ductile and, as such, more prone to shattering. It is more expensive to produce than 8650 steel or chrome vanadium and this, along with its lower ductility, means it is only used by a few manufacturers.
Why are spanners made by drop forging?
The reason why manufacturers want you to know that a tool is drop forged is because this tells you something about the strength and durability of the tool. The other two ways to make a tool would be casting it from molten metal or machining it (cutting material away) from a larger block of metal.
Why is drop forging used for spanners?
Because of the high speed of forging hammer and the high variation of wrench shape, the internal structure of wrench is fully changed and the forging density is increased. Therefore, the spanner wrench forged by CNC closed die drop forging hammer has high hardness and strong wear resistance.
What is the material used to make a spanner?
Generally it is written on the spanner itself. Mostly it’s Chrome Vanadium Steel(Alloy Steel). Chromium increases hardness and provides wear resistance whereas Vanadium provides structural strength, ductility and toughness. And sometimes Carbon Steel. Link for material properties:
What are the different types of spanners and wrenches?
Understand the pro’s and con’s of using various types of spanner and wrench including adjustable spanners, pipe or stillson wrenches, socket sets and basin wrenches. Also you can see what each part of the wrench or spanner is called. Don’t want to do this job yourself?
What are spanners used for?
Spanners are gripping tools used to tighten or loosen fasteners like nuts and bolts. They are used for the tighter grip they provide. Typically, a double end spanner is made from steel alloys.
What is a nut spanner used for?
It is used on round nuts having holes in the periphery to receive the spanner pin. The distance between its leg can be enlarged or narrowed down to use it on all types of nuts. All kinds of spanner are used to dismantle or tight nut or bolts of a specific size.
